Ariel

In Disney's The Little Mermaid, Princess Ariel was the daughter of King Triton of Atlantica and was a mermaid. She was fascinated by humans and collected objects created by them. Ariel had six sisters. Her friends included a fish named Flounder and a seagull named Scuttle. Sebastian was a lobster tasked by King Triton to keep her out of trouble. Ariel rescued Prince Eric from a shipwreck and fell in love with him. She made a bargain with the sea-witch Ursula, in which she traded her voice for a pair of legs. She had three days to make Eric fall in love with her or she would be Ursula's prisoner. She missed the deadline, but King Triton made a deal to become Ursula's prisoner instead. Ursula continued to try and kill Ariel, but was killed by Prince Eric. When she died, all her prisoners were freed. Her father gave her legs, and she and Prince Eric were married.

In The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, Ariel and Eric had a daughter named Melody. When she was a baby, Morgana, the sister of Ursula tried to kill her. Ariel and Eric decided to keep Melody away from the sea to protect her. Melody could not resist the sea, however, and was tricked by Morgana. Ariel became a mermaid again to try and find Melody. After Morgana was defeated, Ariel became human again.

Ariel is a Hebrew name that means 'lion of God.' In 2014, Ariel was the 133rd most popular name for girl and the 738th most popular name for boys in the U.S.
