In Pixar's Brave, Princess Merida was from the Kingdom of DunBroch. Merida was skilled in archery and horseback riding. She was also a bit of a tomboy. She was the daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. During a conflict with her mother over her future, Merida used a spell given to her by a witch that unexpectedly turned her mother into a bear. Fortunately, they were able to break the spell, and her mother allowed Merida more freedom.
In Once Upon a Time, Merida was the leader of DunBroch following the death of her father. Her rule was not accepted by the clans because she was a woman, and they kidnapped her three brothers. She sought a will o the wisp to take her to her brothers so she could find them. She offered to share the wisp with Emma Swan who was seeking Merlin.
Merida is a Latin name derived from Emerita the feminine of Emeritus which means someone who achieved a high honor. In 2014, 101 girls were named Merida in the U.S.
