If not, she would be bound to Ursula forever. When it appeared that Ariel would succeed, Ursula transformed herself into a woman, and put Eric under a spell, and convinced him that she was his true love, not Ariel. The enchantment was broken, but not in time for Eric to kiss Ariel. Ursula took Ariel prisoner, and King Triton offered himself and his trident in exchange for her freedom.
